What Working With a Solo Designer Is Actually Like

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s really like to work with a solo designer instead of a big agency, here’s the honest answer.
It’s more personal. It’s more collaborative. And it’s not for everyone.
I run CK Studio, a one-woman branding and web design studio. That means when you work with me, you’re working directly with the designer. No account managers. No handoffs. No “let me check with my team.”
At the same time, I’m not working in a vacuum. I have a trusted network of creatives I collaborate with when a project calls for it, things like photography, copywriting, development, or specialty support. You still work directly with me, and I stay hands-on throughout the entire process.
Just real conversations, intentional design, and the right people involved when it matters.
You’re Not “Just a Project” in a System
One of the biggest differences between working with a solo designer and an agency is attention.
At a large agency, projects move through systems. Designers rotate. Communication is layered. That works well for massive companies with massive budgets.
At CK Studio, you’re working one-on-one with me from day one.
I’m the person asking the questions.I’m the one designing your brand or website.I’m the one thinking about how it actually needs to show up in the real world.
That level of involvement is baked into how I structure my branding and website design services, so your project never feels rushed or generic.

You Get a Collaborative Experience, Not a Transaction
Working with a freelance brand designer should feel like a collaboration, not a transaction.
I don’t believe in disappearing for weeks and then dropping a “final” design on your lap. Instead, the process is conversational. We talk through ideas. We refine things together. You’re involved without being overwhelmed.
Clients often tell me this feels more relaxed and way more aligned with how they like to work.
You don’t need to know design language. You don’t need to have all the answers. That’s my job.
Boundaries Are Still Part of the Process
This part matters.
Just because I’m a solo designer doesn’t mean the process is loose or unstructured. Clear timelines, defined deliverables, and boundaries are what make the work better for both of us.
You’ll know:
What’s included
What the timeline looks like
How feedback works
When the project wraps
That structure keeps things efficient and protects the creative energy on both sides.

You’re Hiring Experience, Not Just Aesthetic Taste
A common misconception about hiring a freelance web designer or brand designer is that you’re just paying for visuals.
In reality, you’re paying for experience, judgment, and strategy.
I’ve worked with small businesses, growing brands, and larger companies. I understand how branding and website design actually function beyond looking good on a screen.
And when a project needs additional expertise beyond design, I bring in collaborators I trust, without turning your project into a multi-layered agency experience. I remain your main point of contact, and everything stays cohesive.
Every decision is intentional. Colors, typography, layout, messaging. It all connects back to how your business needs to be perceived.
If you want a clearer picture of how projects are structured from start to finish, I recommend reading Understanding the graphic design process: what clients should expect. It breaks down how design projects actually work behind the scenes and helps set expectations early.
Is Working With a Solo Designer Right for You?
Working with a solo designer is a great fit if you:
Want a personal, hands-on experience
Value collaboration and communication
Prefer working directly with the person doing the work
Appreciate having access to a broader creative network without managing it yourself
It might not be the best fit if you:
Need a massive team across multiple departments
Want constant daily revisions
Prefer a highly corporate agency structure
And that’s okay.
The goal is alignment, not forcing a fit.
